St. Mary of the Mills has the capacity to serve 528 students. There are 2 classes of each grade kindergarten through eighth grade. Class size is limited to 24 students in each kindergarten class and 30 students in each of the respective classes.
St. Mary’s is unique in that its location in Laurel (northern Prince George’s County) makes it convenient to, and therefore able to serve, Prince George’s County but also Howard, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel Counties. We presently have students from all four counties attending with the largest numbers coming from Prince George’s and Howard Counties.
Student Support Services
Understanding that the educational needs of the children are only some of those a school must meet, St. Mary’s provides a number of non-academic services for our student population.
- A twice-weekly hot lunch program is provided as an extension of the parent volunteer program. At other times the students carry their lunches. Milk is available for purchase for the year.
- An extended day care service is offered both before and after school every day school is in session. The majority of the day care staff is school faculty.
- An Archdiocesan-wide CYO athletic/sports program for both school and children of the parish provides an opportunity for participation in competitive team sports.
- Weekly music lessons are offered to interested students in grades 4-8 on all band instruments through an Archdiocese sponsored instrumental music program.
- In addition to providing opportunities to meet the non-academic needs of our students, St. Mary’s also provides services to students who are experiencing difficulties both educationally and emotionally.
- Two full-time resource teachers work cooperatively with local education agencies to identify students with special needs and supervise the implementation of recommendations by these agencies. Additionally, they make informal assessments and then makes recommendations based on the assessment results as well as additional testing results made by other professionals. They are available to work with all students who have written IEPs. The resource teachers also supervise paraprofessionals and volunteers who work with students with special needs in all grade levels. They also work with the classroom teachers creating and implementing modified academic programs for those students who have different needs. Additionally, St. Mary’s has a licensed social worker that serves as our guidance counselor. She is available to assist students with a variety of social and emotional concerns. Children can meet with the counselor individually on a limited basis. Large and small group guidance sessions are also provided to help students learn specific information about themselves and their development.
