St. Mary’s Drama is a process oriented, skills based theatre program for students 1st through 8th grades. Rooted in the dual belief that all students have been blessed with unique gifts and talents, and that artistic performance can strengthen confidence and access learning, the goal of the drama program is to provide students with a variety of opportunities to shine. It nourishes a safe, fun environment for St. Mary’s students to explore and develop their talents and be part of a team working toward a common goal, all while using their gifts to give glory and honor to God.
Through three musical productions and periodic performance based fundraisers, students are given opportunities to participate in performance, tech crew, scenery creation, choreography, and student directing. All productions are performed in the Monsignor Keesler Parish Center.
Elementary Musical, Fall – Students 3rd-5th grade perform in an age appropriate musical. Select middle school students act as student directors and tech crew, and assist in scenery/prop creation. Rehearsals are held once a week after school and participation is by registration. All students who register are included in the cast. Two performances are presented for the public.
Middle School Musical, Early Spring – Students 6th-8th grade comprise the full cast and crew of an age appropriate musical. Rehearsals are held 1-2 times per week after school and participation is by registration. All students who register are cast. Tech crew is volunteer based. Two to four performances are presented for the public.
Primary Musical, Late Spring – All 1st and 2nd grade students learn a 25-30 minute theme oriented musical during the school day. 1st graders perform as the chorus, while 2nd graders play the spoken roles. One performance is presented for the public.
Additionally, in 2016 collaboration was developed between the St. Mary’s drama program and Pallotti High School Theatre. Interested students can now participate in periodic after school skills based workshops led by theatre teachers and students from Pallotti’s Arts Academy.
